ROT AT THE ROOTS
Group exhibition
April 2024, BLANCO, Ghent, BE
‘The rot at the roots is the root of the problem’ was the starting point for a group exhibition with textile artist Thomas Renwart and architect Theo de Meyer.
I chose to work around human greed and sea life and created a series of five large works depicting underwater landscapes on which red corals where added with monotypes. Red corals or blood corals have been harvested by humans since the ancient Egyptians for the jewellery trade. These precious corals have been used throughout history in the same way as precious metals or gems. Because of this harvest blood coral populations have been diminished. The species is not endangered anymore, but the population is neither balanced in places like the Mediterranean.
The replaced corals in my images hold a stark contrast against the soft monochrome landscapes. The use of monotypes is symbolic in that it is only possible to make a single print of each image.
