MAYDAY

Solo exhibition
26.04.25 - 04.05.25, Epreuve d’artiste, Ghent

Mayday is an emergency procedure word used internationally as a distress signal in radio communications. It is used to signal a life-threatening emergency primarily by mariners and aviators. The signal is actually derived from the French ‘m’aidez’.
About a year before this exhibition I quit my job, started working as an artist fulltime, moved studios and my relationship ended. I felt out of place, detached and unstable since these big things in my life all changed in two months time.
A lot of changes I had been working towards for a while now, but once they arrived I needed time to adapt.
Out of these uncertain times a series of ‘self portraits’ evolved depicting myself as a stranded boat. The surroundings are colourful and soft depicting the bright future ahead.
For the exhibition I was able to find a 70 metre cargo ship to use as an exhibition space.
