(Missing) (Making) Mountains
Solo exhibition
25-28.01.2024, Show Show, Gent
This exhibition has four titles in one…
‘Missing mountains’ is for the holidays spent in Austria as a young boy with my family. Memories of ascents, vanishing tree lines and maps with brightly coloured lines displaying possible adventures. Vast landscapes, wide views and feeling small next to a mountain are all things I actively miss in the city in Belgium.
‘Making mountains’ refers to my hobby of painting miniatures as a boy. My favourite part of the hobby was building big miniature landscapes for the figures to battle in. These first experiences of losing all sense of time in a creative act where formative for me. Letting my imagination roam free I’d create mountainous landscapes out of painted styrofoam and tree bark.
‘Missing making mountains’ is for returning to this feeling of creating a new world of my own. Some of the mountains in this exhibition are made up of multiple images that do not align very well. Walking routes and mountain lakes are created and mountains are de- and reconstructed. Miniature landscapes from the past are revisited.
‘Mountains’ is for the mountains.
